Hazards In The Ocean
Surfing is such a great activity and sport that people enjoy worldwide. But, plenty of people don't surf even though they live near the beach because of certain fears. Often times, these fears are sharks. Yet, people fail to realize that that is only a portion of the danger they will face.
The main fear people face before learning to surf is sharks. Sharks are seen as the scariest predators in the ocean. In reality, sharks are the least of your worries. In 2022, there were only 57 confirmed shark attacks worldwide. They are very rare, and if you do come across one, stay calm and swim smoothly away, and never turn your back on them.
Another hazard the ocean provokes is Coral Reefs. They are beautiful, but very dangerous. Some of the best waves around the world break over coral reefs. If you step on coral, seek medical attention immediately. If you pull it out yourself and miss a piece, the leftover coral can grow inside your skin, causing pain and infection.
Stingrays are also very dangerous. Although not death-threatening, stings are very painful. To avoid getting stung, shuffle your feet when entering shallow water. If you do unfortunately get stung, find a lifeguard. A mixture with half vinegar and half water will treat it the quickest. No matter how much you've heard it, peeing on it will not make the pain go away.
Whenever visiting an unfamiliar beach, look out for hazard signs. There are many other hazards such as jellyfish, man-o-wars, rip currents, etc.
